Green Dot Cyprus

The Packaging and Packaging Waste Law (L.32(I)/2002) with the amendments and regulations that go along, define the framework of responsibilities of the enterprises that are considered as packaging managers and that must secure the recovery and recycling of their packaging.

Following the practice which stands in the other countries of the European Union (EU) as well, a significant number of enterprises in Cyprus have established the non-profit organization Green Dot (Cyprus) Public Co Ltd with the aim to organize the first collective compliance System in Cyprus. The Company has been set up under the Laws of the Republic of Cyprus and it is a Public unlisted company. The company is registered as Public because it has over 50 shareholders.

Green Dot Cyprus is the first Packaging and Packaging Waste Management System in Cyprus.

The Organization was established on the initiative of the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI), as an umbrella organization, and today its shareholders include enterprises-responsible packaging managers, distributors, raw material responsible parties and packaging manufacturers, as well as the CCCI.

Within the framework of the organization and development of the System with its main target being to develop a System that utilizes the experience and best practice in other countries of the European Union, the Management of the System chose to cooperate with the respective organization in Belgium, FOST Plus company. The criterion of choosing FOST Plus was the effectiveness of the System (high recovery and recycling percentages) and the reasonable compliance cost (fees) to the enterprises. The collaboration with FOST Plus continues successfully, and Green Dot has a very credible partner ready to help and guide Green Dot Cyprus.

At the same time, the organization is a member of the biggest world packaging collective management organization network, i.e. Packaging Recovery Organization Europe, its seat being in Brussels, and it includes 32 other similar systems in the world (more information on the organization at www.pro-e.org). With the above participation, the System became the exclusive manager of the Green Dot Mark in Cyprus.
