FAQs

Generally, you should be drinking around 8 to 15 glasses of water per day. But the exact amount you should drink depends greatly on a number of crucial factors, namely your body size, dietary intake (i.e. what else you have eaten), activity level, and climatic conditions. For instance if you are exercising, you should be drinking more water to rehydrate your body after sweating. The same applies in summer (like in Cyprus), when it is much hotter and you tend to sweat a lot more. What is for certain is that you should not wait until you are thirsty to drink water. Thirst is a sign of already being somewhat dehydrated, therefore you should maintain proper balance by drinking water regularly throughout the day.

It should also be noted that certain drinks have diuretic substances and in turn dehydrate your body. For instance caffeinated drinks, such as coffee, black tea, soft drinks (primarily cola drinks), energy drinks, as well as alcohol. As such, for every glass of one of these drinks, you should be balancing it out with another glass of water.

A health tip: a glass of boiled water with some fresh lemon juice is the best way to start your day – perhaps add some honey, ginger or other herbs for flavour.

Indeed. Especially in warm places such as Cyprus, people commonly eat fruits such as watermelon and melon, and drink lots of tea to maintain bodily hydration. However, it is important to keep in mind that this should not completely substitute your daily intake of water. Water is still the purist and best form of refreshment available.

Even the modest amounts of minerals and nutrients found in regular drinking water play a beneficial role in your health.

Calcium and magnesium are important for strengthening bones, as well as for muscle function, including heart function. Magnesium is also important for various biological functions, such as synthesis of protein, muscle and nerve function, and regulation of blood sugar and regulating the body’s blood pressure.

In fact, people who live in areas with very soft water (which is low in minerals) may have a higher risk of heart disease. The same thing can be true if you live in an area with very hard water. All those minerals can be rough on the plumbing, so people who have hard water often use a water-softening system to remove minerals.

Bottled mineral water contains up to four times as much calcium and magnesium as regular tap water. Studies show that people whose drinking water was low in magnesium were able to lower their blood pressure by drinking a litre of mineral water every day.

Of course, there are other ways to get magnesium. Brown rice, almonds, lima beans, and spinach are some examples of good sources of magnesium. But drinking mineral water can definitely add to your intake of calcium, magnesium, and other minerals.

Do however visit a local nutritionist to learn more about what diets are ideal; what you should be eating and drinking, and in what quantities/volume.

A spring is a point where water naturally flows to the surface out of the ground. A spring may flow the whole year or only sometimes. This depends on the water getting into the ground all of the time (rain) or only once in a while (snow melting).

Some springs, like that at Farmakas village in Cyprus, produce water that is good for various health reasons. At Farmakas Natural Spring Water, we treat and bottle this natural water for the Cyprus market.

Tap water in Cyprus is desalinated sea water or rain/snow water collected in reservoirs during the winter period. It is chlorinated and generally does not taste so good in most areas.

Tap water in Cyprus will not likely make you ill, but bottled water is recommended and generally preferred throughout the island.

Generally, tap water should be OK to cook with in Cyprus, especially as you are boiling it. Large bottles of spring water and water fountains are also an efficient solution for cooking.
